Getting a little better.
I helped rescue a snowy egret today ^_^. He was getting picked on by a bunch of pelicans out on a shell bar - for a minute he got really still and we thought he died. I passed Willie, the BoB (biologist on board) the net. The little guy was scooped up and put in an ice cooler with a towel on top. I peeked on him after we docked up; he had his head on his wing, asleep. He's set to go to the sea bird sanctuary. I'd really like to check on him alone, once I get my license.
I guess...I'm just sick of shit happening and not being able to do anything. I broke down completely in voice lessons yesterday (Stawsk was rather flummoxed) over the war in Iraq, which I had been brooding unhappily over ever since the fourth. That, coupled with my desire for escapism is what has been putting me in such a down mood lately. I'd give anything (within reason - Willow, my dog, and Paul Simon, my guitar, are completely out of the bargain) for a road trip with a bunch of friends. Just in state - driving around and hitting hick towns just for kicks. I can't even visit my Aunt in Ireland when she's perfectly willing to take me. I'm fucking seventeen. This is bull. I have less of a year till graduation. Wait - (checks spchs.org) 289 days until I am done with high school. The farthest I be is UCF. None of you will have seen the last of me. *cheesy grin* |

I finally bought my guitar!!!
It's a steel string acoustic - definitely steel string, because the strings are so friggen' hard to press. I can play a Em (e minor) and a G, according to some stuff I've learned how to do from cyberfret.com - it even teaches how to read music, so I know which notes get which beats, and F-A-C-E but not the dissected notes nor can I play them off the top of my head. It is something though. Still, I'm getting there...
I watched a good movie yesterday - Canadian Bacon, Michael Moore's only non-documentary. It's about this American president who tries to get his approval ratings up by starting a cold war with Canada. "Like maple syrup, Canada's evil oozes over the United States." MUAHAHAHAHAHA! It was quite good.

I have a zillion thoughts in my head right now...
All vieing for attention...
Pick me! Pick me!
Even my dog. Willow is lying down looking up at me with soulful puppy eyes. Wanting a belly rub or an ear scratch, probably (I gave her one - cute as she is).
I have four things I want to do around the weekend of July 10th. On Thursday I want to go to a meeting at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (where I get my hours done) to be able to do night watches over sea turtle nest areas with Ashley and Ang - Ang did that once and she said her nest never hatched that night. I've been told to get watch dates later in the summer when it is more likely to see them hatch. Then on the 9th there's this (free!!!) concert with a bunch of local bands (As You Wish, ER, etc) that Ted told me about. Then there's this anime convention going on that weekend where we could stay in a hotel room with a bunch of people - craziness abound! goo goo g'joob! Then I might go scuba diving that weekend. . .
I went to the renovated downtown Clearwater library after yesterday's aquarium shift. SO FRIGGIN' COOL! Four stories high. There's a little art gallery full of paintings kids did in their art classes at Clearwater High, some "Lights out for sea turtles" drawings by elementary school kids, and a "Save the Indian Elephants" gallery with painting done by elephants. I wonder if elephants are color blind. . .Anyway, I looked for Orwell's 1984 and they didn't have it. Disappointed, I tried to look for works of a few of the Beatnik writers - I did a reserch paper in English on the revival of trascendentalist literature in the 60's and the Beats were pretty much the guys that got the whole 60s culture started. They did dope, pot, acid, used it for mediation, screwed around delved into the wild world of art and sex back in the nicey-conservative 50s. Anyway, the library was COMPLETELY OUT of Jack Kerouac. The mannish women behind the information desk said there must be a revival of his work going around. I ended up Getting Ken Kesey's Demon Box, which is a great read so far. I might be stuck having to buy One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, because I doubt that one stays on the shelf that long.
I'm reading Demon Box, Excel Saga (#2), and Sense and Sensibility all at the same time. I like reading that way because then I never ever get bored.
What really, really gets to me lately is how people say "Oh, we're bombing Iraq because they have terrorists." Yeah, and you probably like going to countries overseas, like Canada. The US has terrorists: Klan members, school shooters, Udabombers, Oklahoma city bombers, the highest murder rates of the first world buddies - I guess we'd better drop some bombs over the White House so we can be "liberated" of this terrorist regime we're in.
Anyway...I highly recommend you all check out Majid's blog, from Iraq. Props to him. *nods*
Peace out y'all. |

My next-door neighbor, Carol, teaches an art class at USF that covers literature, music, and art itself. She's a middle-aged women with red curly hair, glasses, and a silver PT Cruser decked out with anti-Bush and Rosie the Riviteer bumperstickers. After waking up at around noon, Karen and I wandered down to the pool with my Mom and sister. Carol was already down there. She is the one who taught me about post-modernism.
I sort of knew WHAT the concept was without knowing the termanology behind it. It's open-ended art and literature. Pre-modernism is Harry Potter; you sit down and get entertained. Post modernism is like Toni Morisson's Song of Solomon, where you have to think and interpret, you don't just kick back and be entertained.
A big theory in the post-modern world is that no story has one author. They have thousands. When you think about it it makes a lot of sense. Here's some of the authors of my latest exploit, Saran Wrap Celing:
- Me, Sorcha
- Ted
- Jeff
- A few concerts I've been to
- John Lennon
- Paul McCartny
- Jonathan Larson
- Stephen Page
- Ed Robertson
- J.K. Rowling
- Some of the guys from The Strokes who said their school was "for rich fuck-ups"
- Stephen King
- Neil Gaiman
- Some show on Animal Planet about death omens surrounding black dogs
- My Mom
- My Grandmother
- etc
- etc
- etc
Apoligies for the spelling errors, but I have to run to church. Peace out y'all. |

That's what I'm telling my Mom when (or if) she makes me change out of my Ramones shirt.
I want my friggin' guitar already!
I tried to dread a clump of my hair yesterday. It was quite an interesting, frizzy looking dread (which new dreads are supposed to look like, according to the site I was reading the backcombing instructions from). I had to take it out after Pop brought up that it probably wouldn't go with the dress code. I was pissed off for a while over it. I'm over it all now.
If James Brown was the preacher at St. Judes, I'd WANT to go to church.
Yes, that IS a Blues Brothers reference.

Karen, Cathy, and Mrs. McCarthy and I arrived at the Oldsmar theatre for the 8:15 showing of Fahrenheit 9/11 at around 8. Cathy bought Karen and I our tickets to the R-rated movie. Since Cathy is 19, this is technically illegal, but Moore told us to sneak in on TRL, so... All is cool nuts. Cathy said she was ready to break into a rant on the likelihood of Karen and I being drafted and how we NEEDED to see this movie *glomps Cathy*. Again, uber coolness. We met Ashley and her friend, another fan of The Darkness whose name eludes me for the moment in the theatre, were we had stadium seats in the center of a row near the top. The other screen room playing Fahrenheit had a line outside it, and we were informed by an employee of the theatre that the movie was completely sold out. The movie itself was by far Moore's best work. Some scenes were really, really funny, balanced out by somber, sickening pictures of war. As the ending credits started to roll, Fahrenheit 9/11 was given a standing ovation.
If you haven't seen it and heard loads of conservative morons label the movie a piece of crap without seeing it, take this into consideration: the majority of Congress support the war on Iraq. Exactly one member of congress has a child serving in Iraq. One. In the movie, Moore wanders around D.C. accosting congressmen with Marines fliers, asking them to sign their kids up for such a "noble" cause. None of them do. If serving their country is such an honor, if this war is such a wonderful, noble thing, then where are their kids?
All lies, huh?
Another thing: as we were waiting for Mrs. McCarthy (she had to park a long way from the theatre) there were St. Pete for Peace people passing out fliers (I told him cool beans). Karen spotted them being stopped by a theatre employee who made one of them stop passing out fliers. Michael Moore's website, there is a string of testimonials praising the film, one of them from the Oldsmar theatre, the same time we saw it. They too were passing out fliers...
"The 8:15 showing was sold out and they were standing in line for the next showing. My wife and I greatly enjoyed your film with a full audience. There was joy and laughter throughout the film which lead to a standing ovation at the end of the film. When we left the theater, we saw several members of various progressive groups handing out flyers. However, the off duty police officer (the Florida State Highway Patrol) told them that they were not allowed to hand out flyers in front of the theater and they had to go across the driveway to the plaza parking lot (which they did). When someone asked the officer for her name and badge number, she said her name was Florida State Highway Patrol and walked away. Then as a group of us were talking in the plaza parking lot, the other off duty police officers (Pinellas County Sheriff) came over and said that we needed to leave. They said that the management has asked them to instruct us to leave. What management? The theater appreciated our business and showed the movie so we would be there. Someone asked for their names and badge numbers and they said they would provide that information (which they never did). One of the group had a camera and pulled it out to take a picture of the police officers, but naturally, they had a call across the parking lot and batted away in their cars. I guess this is part of the patriot act that Congress didn't read."

A whoop-ass scene from The Blues Brothers, my new favorite movie of all time. For a few months or so. Good music, and the action is like Coyote and Roadrunner live (see screen shot above). Sooooooooo friggin' funny.
Karen is still over. She's braiding a chunk of hair right now.
I've had a long day. Went to work at the Aquarium today from 9 till 1. Our YMCA group never showed up for their tour (those people are quite unreliable) so the day was long, air condition-less, and boring. From there I went home, ate a veggie pizza burritto, went to voice lessons, found out my throat was full of shit. Stawsk was quite sympathetic. My voice still has to "let go". If you sing, you know what I'm talking about, if you don't, I really can't explain it so just nod and pretend you understand.
We're gonna see Fahrinhite 9/11 at 8, definitely with Karen, hopefully with Ashley (who has managed to stay remarkably down-to-earth after all these years). I'm sure it's gonna be a real downer, but as long as I'm supporting good ole' Moore on another dissentful exploit, I'm happy.
I'm listening to Guster for the first time. They're prettey good. |

Feeling rather bored.
I continued working on Saran Wrap yesterday. I think it needs to get a new name... While my "cult following" back at school all settled on the title ages ago (it's a reference to the whole "Glass Ceiling" idea) I'm still oscillating on the concept. Part of me seems to think it fits just because it's always been there, part of me thinks it's a trite, stupid play on words. I'm working on the ending of the first draft. I know what happens - which adds to the ubiquitous blah. I'm killing off a central character. I don't feel like they are just some fictional person anymore. I feel like I'm destroying his/her life, and the lives of the friends around him or her. I really have no clue how to add closure to the story - besides just seeing the person die. Plus I don't know if I'm writing Rick's angel dust trip right...
I really do feel like Ringo at the beginning of Yellow Submarine: board, dreary, and a bit lonely, waiting to be whisked away by a Yellow Submarine to save Pepperland from the Blue Meanies with a little help from my friends.
Now that I have acquired my new found wealth (cat sitting money) I can afford a decent acoustic, which I want to learn before I learn electric. I want to go pawn shop browsing for one with Ashely, but I probably can't go because riding with Ashley is completely taboo, not because she's a bad driver, but because driving with anyone my own age is bad, even though I've had to at times. They apparently fail to realize that getting out would probably relase some of the tension I have built up with my sister from being in the house for so long, and that Ashley is the most decent driver I know, but what do I know about my friends or my sanity?
I also have a new addiction...Orbit gum. I'll chew and chew until the flavor starts to fade, then I'll spit it in it's wrapper and start on another one. I'll bet you anything it's a carcinogen. Everything good is.
Caffeine and Sweetener addictions: my Anti-Drug. |

Watched Yellow Submarine with Chloe today. Weather it's good or not depends on your outlook: if you are an imaginative/artistic/slightly spacey type *waves*, you will find it quite gratifying. If you're a Beatles fan, you'll love it. If you are serious and logical, you'll be quite lost. It was colorful and quite fun to watch, good songs including "All Together Now" "Eleanor Rigby" "Hey Bulldog" "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" "When I'm 64" "All You Need Is Love" etc, etc, etc. The chuckle-funny humor was a nice touch too:
John: Poor Ringo. What are we going to do without him?
Fred: Learn to sing trios!
Paul: Nah, let’s save the poor devil.
My cat sitting duties are over, as the Rodgers have returned from their cruse trip. I'll miss the cats, but now I've got GUITAR MONEY! WOOT!
I got Senior pictures taken today - we had to wear a velvet black smock with a dip in the neck, then got to choose other cover ups. I picked out a red wrap, a fuzzy powder blue wrap, and a leather jacket. I drove Pop home and he said I've gotten much better on my driving; hopefully I'll get my license soon.
My schedule for school next year has issues. Five out of seven of the classes I'm taking only meet one period out of the school day, making fitting all the classes in quite a challenge. They've apparently canceled creative writing *screams/cries* so I'm taking 2D art instead. The "great" state of Florida requires us all to take a heath class, which doesn't fit into my schedule, which I've put off so I could take chorus every year, which I have to take online in order to graduate. I asked Mr Haymen (my guidance councilor) if I could take it online last year and he said "only if it can't fit into your schedule before you graduate". Funny how that worked out.
Happy 19th to Cathy (aka dharmablue)! Huzzah! |
